Speaking from Tbilisi the capital of Georgia, where he had arrived after participating in the service of Nodar, held in his home town of Bakuriani. Pat Hickey said that “the memorial service was very moving, a very solemn occasion”.
Hours earlier Mr Hickey and server other Olympic officials including the CEO of the Vancouver Winter Games John Furlong met with the athletes family in their home. “It was very quiet, but an impressive informal gathering” said Mr Hickey.
The memorial was scheduled as required in the Greek Orthodox Church to mark the 40th day after Nodar’s death.
The memorial was also attended by Felix Loch, the Germany luge athlete who won the gold medal in Vancouver. Georgia has plans to build a luge track in Bakuriani as a fitting tribute to Nodar Kumaritashvili.
