He was a very close friend of Lord Killanin, his predecessor as IOC President – and when Lord Killanin was seriously ill, he arranged superb nursing care facilities for him in Ireland.
His achievements in the Olympic Movement were immense and Irish sport and the Olympic Council of Ireland continues to this day to benefit from the sponsorship arrangements that he set in place in his period as IOC President.
The Olympic Movement in Ireland has lost a champion and supporter. May he rest in peace.”
Mr. Hickey is attending Juan Antonio Samaranch’s funeral in Spain today (April 22) on behalf of the Olympic Council of Ireland and in his role as President of the European Olympic Committees.
