Golden 25 Personalities 2012

January 3, 2012

Pat Hickey – President makes an impressive No. 7 in ATR Golden 25

The Golden 25 is a year-end compilation of the personalities who will have the greatest influence over the business of the Olympics in the coming year. While other end-of-year rankings look back, the Golden 25 looks ahead. The listing is the product of a matrix assembled by ATR that includes names, events and issues. 2012 marks the 16th annual Golden 25.

7 – Patrick Hickey, European Olympic Committees President
The IOC member from Ireland is closing in on his ambition to take a pew on the Executive Board after his selection earlier this month as the nominee from the Association of National Olympic Committees. Hickey is bidding to replace ANOC president Mario Vazquez Rana next year when he steps down at age 80.

But Hickey may yet face opponents for the EB nomination at the 204-member ANOC general assembly in Moscow in April, with another hurdle still to clear – a July vote by the IOC Session in London.

Hickey, 66, will seek to further reinforce the EOC’s stature as the most important continental Olympic body by pushing through a vote in favor of the European Games project. Voting at the EOC’s extraordinary general assembly on April 12 will determine if the concept is launched or abandoned altogether.  As head of the Olympic Council of Ireland, Hickey is aiding London 2012 preparations for his country’s athletes. He will also see the fruits of his lobbying efforts fulfilled when the 2012 Olympic torch arrives in Dublin on June 6. The IOC made the Irish city an exception to its ban on an international relay after protests marred the Beijing 2008 torch trek. The symbolic gesture of the flame journeying from Northern Ireland to the South aims to shine a light on the 14 years of peace north of the border and on the rich heritage and sporting ambitions of Ireland as a whole.

Also ahead for Hickey is a trip to Rio as a member of the IOC Coordination Commission for the 2016 Olympics.
