London 2012 lightweight gold medallist Katie Taylor has been selected as Team Ireland’s flag bearer for the opening ceremony for the first European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The five-time world champion will lead out the Ireland squad in the inaugural continental games at the at the 63,000 capacity Olympic Stadium in the Azeri capital.
Taylor, an athlete Ambassador for the Games is one of eight gold medal winners who have also been chosen to carry the European Games flag during the ceremony.
Ireland have 62 competitors at 14 sports at the games, including 12 boxers.
6,000 athletes, representing 50 countries in 20 sports,will compete at Baku 2015.
“To be representing Team Ireland is a great honour and being selected as the flagbearer for both the European Games and Team Ireland will be a truly unforgettable experience,” Taylor said.
